Meet Lori Hayes
My name is Lori Hayes (Gisetto), and I've called Reading home since 2011 – 15 wonderful years raising my family in this vibrant and welcoming community. As a Town Meeting Member in Precinct 8 for the past four years, I've been deeply engaged in our community and our schools. Now, I'm ready to bring that dedication directly to the School Committee to support every student's success in the Reading Public Schools....

Lori’s Family
Every Child. Every Chance.
I want children to start learning and practicing leadership now—at whatever scale fits their age, personality, and stage of development. Meet them where they are and help them grow into it naturally from the start.
The National Honor Society requires two leadership roles to become a member, but not every student can (or needs to) be a team captain, class officer, or club president—those spots are limited. Without one of those standout positions, children may occasionally doubt their own leadership abilities.
Leadership shows up in countless meaningful ways, big and small. I want kids to recognize those moments in their own lives, take pride in them, and feel good about stepping up—whether leading a group project, helping a younger sibling, organizing something small, or simply taking initiative.
Positive reinforcement for these acts builds confidence and encourages them to keep making good choices and seeing themselves as leaders for themselves and others. That foundation will serve them well for life.
Before applying to college, my son actively sought meaningful ways to demonstrate leadership to admissions officers. He found that opportunity when he pursued and secured a grant to fund financial literacy materials for RMHS. From drafting the proposal to collaborating with school staff and local bank administrators, he led the entire process—ultimately delivering $970 worth of financial literacy resources to RMHS business classes.
I believe that when we cultivate leadership skills and personal responsibility early, students are more likely to make thoughtful, creative, and impactful contributions to their schools, families, and communities. My son’s experience is a powerful reminder that when adults intentionally nurture leadership from a young age—and teach children to recognize unique and even unconventional opportunities to lead—they often rise to the occasion in ways that create meaningful, far-reaching good for everyone. Just as importantly, these experiences strengthen students’ confidence, self-worth, and sense of purpose, reinforcing their belief that their ideas and efforts truly matter.

My School Committee Goals

1. Support a smooth and collaborative onboarding for our superintendent, while sustaining momentum on established district goals to deliver both academic excellence and emotional well-being for every student
Many of our district’s most important initiatives, including literacy alignment, math curriculum alignment, multi-tiered supports, and social-emotional learning, are multi-year efforts that depend on consistent leadership and follow-through. My priority is to ensure that a superintendent transition protects and accelerates this work rather than disrupting the momentum established under the current administration.
2. Protect and strengthen the strong, respectful relationships that define Reading Public Schools—among the School Committee, administration, teachers, parents, students, and our broader community—to ensure collaborative decision-making that benefits everyone.
Reading Public Schools succeeds because of strong relationships and trust across the community. As a School Committee member, I will model professionalism and transparency, prioritize clear communication and active listening, and strengthen collaborative partnerships to protect the culture that allows Reading Public Schools to thrive.
3. In these times of fiscal challenges facing Reading schools, prioritize fiscal responsibility by pursuing efficiency, value, and balanced budgeting—while fiercely protecting and advancing educational excellence across all programs and grade levels.
I believe fiscal responsibility is fundamental to strong district leadership, especially as Reading Public Schools faces ongoing budget pressures and the likelihood of a Proposition 2½ override in the coming years. I will advocate for disciplined, transparent budgeting that prioritizes efficiency and long-term sustainability, while fiercely protecting the academic programs and student supports that define our district’s excellence. My commitment is to ensure financial stewardship and educational quality go hand in hand.
4. Cultivate leadership skills in all K-12 students by emphasizing personal responsibility and positive contributions to their school, family, and community.
I believe our schools should intentionally cultivate leadership skills at every grade level by encouraging personal responsibility, initiative, collaboration, and service to others. It directly reflects Reading Public Schools’ mission to develop students as learners and leaders, prepared to thrive in a complex and changing world. When students are given meaningful opportunities to lead, whether in the classroom, on teams, in clubs, or through peer mentorship, they build confidence, resilience, communication skills, and a stronger sense of purpose. Strengthening student leadership not only benefits our schools and community, it equips students themselves with the skills and self-assurance they need to succeed in high school, college, careers, and life.
